An Incredible Day and Night in Iceland

Yesterday we had a whirlwind day incorporating hot springs, waterfalls, Icelandic horses, landscapes and northern lights to top off the day. Traveling with photographers Andrew Hancock and Brad Rogers is such a joy. Andy has been doing all the driving and in some pretty rough conditions. The Land Cruiser has studded tires and holds the road really well is most conditions.

We have set up base camp at the Hotel Budir on the Snaefellnes Peninsula in western Iceland. We are about two hours from Reykjavik. Having had two days of 50 mile-per-hour winds and white-out conditions we have had to choose our windows of photography very carefully. Still, we have managed to find some great spots while scouting for northern lights locations for the nighttime.

We drove south to Borgarnes then northeast to the “Golden Circle” which is set of small roads running to a large series of waterfalls called Hraunfossar near Reykholt. We photographed the waterfalls, stopped to photograph some beautiful Icelandic horses in a field and scouted for locations near the snow covered lava fields for places to capture the Northern Lights should we be lucky enough to see them. We found a small church near the river and decided to make it a site for Northern Light photography. After a day of snacking on bars and dried fruit we decided to drive back into town to have a quick dinner before settling in for the long wait for the Northern Lights. We got very lucky because about 30 minutes after we arrived back at our first Northern Lights photography location we saw the clouds lift and stars come out. It became fairly clear then the streaks of green and amber light started to appear directly overhead. We quickly set up for our shots and had a great time photographing by the river.
