Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near Sorocco, New Mexico is one of the premiere birding locations in North America, especially in January. I drove from Scottsdale, Arizona up to Payson, Arizona and across remote Highway 60 into New Mexico. I love this route because it passes through desert, pine forest, the Very Large Array, Pie Town, the Continental Divide and ends up in Sorocco. From Sorocco it’s a short 12-mile drive south to San Antonio, New Mexico and the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Thousands of Sandhill cranes, snow geese and other waterfowl winter at Bosque del Apache each year. I love getting up really early to be in place by the water at sunrise and watching the birds fly overhead. I usually photograph at the refuge until the lights goes at around 10 a.m. then I head back to the hotel in Sorocco to download my photos and do some editing. After a quick lunch I head back to the refuge for afternoon light, sunset and then night photography. It makes for a long day but the photos make it well worth the exhaustion.
